Sustainability and Wellness doesn't always equal an "Organic" sticker. Our philosophy emphasizes industry best practices and sourcing our inputs locally, such as brown rice from Louisiana, Whole Oats from Georgia, and Raw Wildflower Honey from our network of community apiaries.

Cordyceps FAQs

How do I consume dried Cordyceps?

Cordyceps can easily be prepared similarly to other loose-leaf teas. For a better extraction, you can simmer them in water for longer periods of time (up to 24 hours in a crock pot).

*Pro tip: Fill an ice cube tray with Cordyceps Tea and freeze overnight to enjoy Cordyceps iced coffee with breakfast!

Or, you can just as easily make your own extracts, powders, and other culinary mushroom products!

(Find more of this here in our "How-To" sections)

The truth is, this can be as simple, or as sophisticated, as you'd like it to be.

Why would I consume dried Cordyceps?

It feels good, man! Plus, consuming the whole dried fruit body preserves the full compound profile of the mushroom exactly as it grew, all polysaccharides, cordycepin, adenosine, and supporting compounds intact.

While processing extracts can concentrate compounds, it can also result in the destruction or absence of others.

There is simply nothing diluted, missing, or oxidized from 100% fruiting bodies.

If you have trust issues with other mushroom products, we made this for you!

How are Cordyceps different from other functional mushrooms?

When it comes to mushrooms, Cordyceps live in a world of their own.

Aside from their fickle cultivation parameters and quirky habits of self expression, they are full of novel compounds only found in the Cordyceps family.

As this relates to C. militaris (the species we cultivate) includes:

  • Cordycepin (often 90x higher than in O. sinensis)
  • Cordycepic acid
  • Cordyyrroles (A and B)
  • Pentostatin

There's a ton more about this in our "Cordyceps Science" section! (subscribe to newsletter for early and direct access)

What do dried Cordyceps taste like?

A simple Cordyceps tea will have a faintly sweet aroma with a subtle, savory essence.

While the base tea gives us notes of bran (as in the cereal)- the profile can easily be complimented with a dash of cinnamon, lending itself to a sort of "Cinnamon Toast Crunch-esque" je ne sais quoi.

Perfect for a picky eater!

How do you grow Cordyceps?

The short answer:

  • Start with a strong culture cross-bred by experts to produce high levels of bio-actives.
  • Expand the mycelium via liquid culture consisting of Reverse Osmosis Water and Local Raw Honey.
  • Innoculate substrate (this is what mushrooms grow on) consisting of Louisianna Brown rice and Georgia Whole Oats, supplemented with Nutritional Yeast and Food grade Gypsum for additional vitamins and nutrients.
  • Cultivate at low temperatures for 65-75 days under carefully calibrated conditions to increase bio-availables.

For the long answer, check out some of our "How-To's" and "Best Practices".

How are the mushrooms harvested and processed?

Siyo Farm harvests everything by hand with extreme attention to detail and care.

  • We pick out the best mushrooms for you, and distribute the rest among ourselves, our friends, and neighbors. We are growing for maximum impact here, so nothing goes to waste.
  • After harvest, we follow Best Practices and briefly expose the Cordyceps to UV rays thereby increasing the levels of vitamin-D and other bio-actives.
  • After a "light bath", the Cordyceps are dried at temperatures below 115F for 2-3 days until "cracker" dry.
  • Dried Cordyceps are then quickly vacuum sealed with Silica Gel packets and stored in a low-light, low-temperature environment. Anything older than 90 days gets used by us or distributed via donations within our local community.

How long do dried Cordyceps last?

Properly dried and stored, Cordyceps can easily last at least a year before beginning to degrade.

That is exactly why we dehydrate at low temperatures, vacuum seal, and ship our mushrooms to you within 90 days from harvest.

You avoid a product that has been sitting around getting imported, processed, oxidized, and mass distributed.

Are Cordyceps vegan?

The sophisticated consumer will have an accurate understanding that Cordyceps are naturally found growing off insect pupae in the wild.

However, our Cordyceps are grown and fruited off of a vegan substrate mixture of local rice and oats (100% bug free)!

Be advised, we do expand our mycelium by feeding it local, raw wildflower honey that is sourced directly from the producer, to us. For some, that may not pass the muster.

Personally, we think it's super cool to support healthy bees!
